As we flip to the last page of our well worn calendars and watch those few stubborn leaves fall to the ground, there is no escaping the reality that winter has yet again, made its way to the Forest City. The Christmas lights are sparkling, the morning sun feels crisp but not warm, we wake to a frosty windshield and an icy commute.
For some of us, we greet each day with the forgiving warmth of a hot cup of coffee to start our day. The perfect way to warm the bones, ward off our urge to hibernate and kick start us into action. We stumble to our coffee makers or line up at the neighbourhood coffee shop for our double doubles or our bold blacks.
For the residents of the Men’s Mission & Rehabilitation Centre, a warm cup of coffee is something to be truly valued, and appreciated. “We go through 40 pounds of coffee every week,” says Debrann Eastabrook, Food Services Supervisor at the Men’s Mission. “We rely on gracious food donations from our community.”
Eastabrook must adhere to a meager budget as she prepares nutritious meals for the clients of the 146 bed facility. “We’re so thankful to those who donate a turkey, a ham or a tin of coffee.” she says. “It’s a small thing that means so much.”
Tomorrow morning, when you’re pouring your first hot cup of coffee, consider donating a tin to the Men’s Mission. You’ll be glad you did.
The Men’s Mission & Rehabilitation Centre is an emergency hostel for homeless men age16 and over and is a residence for men who require longer term care and support.
The dedicated staff and volunteers gratefully accept food donations including fresh fruit, turkeys, roast beef and cheese. Food can be dropped off at the front doors of the mission at 459 York Street.
*frozen items must be dropped off during kitchen hours – Monday – Friday, 6 am to 4 pm*
